Preparing a California association dispute for a constructive next step
Define the disputed action and the practical outcome you are asking for. A concise chronology and a small set of relevant documents are more useful than a long accusation. Separate a request for information, an internal discussion, mediation and a court claim; each can involve different requirements. A conversation with the association does not necessarily stop an outside deadline.

What the California sources address
Sections 5900 and 5910 concern internal dispute resolution. Section 5910 calls for a written request, prompt procedure and association participation when a member invokes it. Preserve the request and any written resolution; a discussion alone is not a guaranteed agreement.
Sections 5925 and 5930 address a separate alternative-dispute-resolution framework for specified enforcement actions. Section 5930 has limits and exceptions, including small claims and assessment disputes except as otherwise provided. Do not assume every disagreement has the same prerequisite or that discussions pause a legal deadline.
Example: identify one disputed decision, attach the relevant notice and provision, propose a concrete correction, and ask for the association’s internal procedure. Obtain California legal advice before making a time-sensitive court demand.
Prepare your next step
- Write a factual timeline and identify the governing provision, notice or decision in dispute.
- Ask for the association’s current internal dispute-resolution procedure and a suitable contact.
- Propose a concrete outcome and record agreements or unresolved points in writing.
- Before litigation or a time-sensitive demand, ask a qualified California professional about prerequisites, deadlines, cost and appropriate forum.
